Summer With a Disabled Child

IT’S SUMMER! Time to go to the pool, have a BBQ, a picnic, go on some sort of vacation, get a front row seat for 4th of July fireworks… Or IS it? You see, a disabled kid might struggle with these things.

LOUD NOISE 🙁

Imagine this: Your 10 year old child is begging to see fireworks. Your 8 year old child, well… hates them. Your 8 year old is disabled and HATES the noise. You suggest seeing them on TV but your 10 year old wants to see real ones and your 8 year old will burst in to tears if you change the channel. What can you do?

If possible, you can have your kids sit with you in the car and watch fireworks from there. You can get your kids food that they both like so they both get a snack/dinner and it will keep the disabled kid patient.

UGH THE CROWDS! 🙁

You WANT to go to the swimming pool but your disabled kid can’t swim or hates crowds. What to do?

TIME

Go at a non-crowded time. (If your non- crowded time is early, make sure you are fully awake before you swim!)

SWIMMING

Choose a shallow pool. In the parts where water goes above the child’s mouth, if possible, hold your child.

STORE/PARK

See if your significant other or trusted friend will take them somewhere

THE FAMILY AND BEST FRIENDS BBQ

You really wanna host a backyard BBQ, but you can’t. When your friends and family come your child will flip out!

Only invite family members and close friends your child knows well.

VACATION!!!

Can your child handle a vacation? …Maybe…

HOTEL

You can try staying with your child in the hotel

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!!!

Try walking around with your child at a local store or mall so they get used to unfamiliar surroundings and crowds.

FUN FAMILY PICNIC

YAY! Its summer and YOU WANT A PICNIC!!

Try showing your kid unfamiliar places so they are used to unfamiliar places. Also try to get them to eat new foods.

So, as you can see there is no perfect solution. Sometimes you just need to go for a kinda good one. I hope your all having fun this summer!
